Asha Sharma, a famous name in the punjabi community in USA, has been serving the community with her art of stage hosting and co-ordinating stage events since many years. Her artistic skills of interacting on the stage makes every event a life time memorable event.

What was so good to make Asha Sharma A Living Legend

Asha Sharma, although a known name in stage hosting in California among punjabi community was recently titled “A Living Legend” by a california based community group. We tried to find the accomplishments of Asha Sharma and were astonished on not finding any valuable achievements which may be considered to reflect her as a Living Legend.

Her performances include hosting a radio station GeetSangeet radio program in Califonria region and presenting the stage anouncer and that too on fees being paid to her. One thing we dont understand is that once you are getting paid to perform or do the job then where is community service. I believe a community service is considered to be providing a valuable service to a community with no materialistic interest.

I guess if the award had been titled something like “Honorable Stage Presenter” might have been more suited rather than trying to stick the word legend. Well one good thing we see a website call ashasharma.org was launched which i believe is good present for her.

Well these are my thoughts and you may or may not agree with them, feel free to post your comments what is your definition of a legend and that too “A Living Legend”

“No girl is a Gurdas Maan or a Harbhajan Maan. Though, the girls have a much sweeter voice then males, without females, no music industry can survive. I think, there is a need for the industry and the artists to realise their (female singers) potential,” says Satti.

After making a name in television and stage anchoring, Sattinder Satti has debuted as a singer through her Punjabi album title ‘Peeng’ or “The Swing”.

The daughter of an army officer from a baptised Sikh family, Satti was born and brought up in Batala.

Satti took to the stage at the age of 19, and earned accolades for her performances.

“In 90 per cent of my stage performances, people have demanded me to become a singer,” she says.

Having established herself as a stage artist, Satti says she is keen to be a trend-setter, and therefore delayed the release of her album.

“I am doing this album only to show that this is the kind of singer I am,” said Satti.

Satti rehearses in the Sufiana style through songs like “Damadam Mast Kalandhar”.

Sushil Kumar Jain of Mohali has groomed her into a singer, says Satti.

Satti is taking her Punjabi singing career seriously, as she sees no popular female Punjabi singer on the horizon. She claims that after the era of Narinder Biba and Surinder Kaur, only Satwinder Bitti has claim to being a popular Punjabi female singer.

Yuba City, California : Tian (Tiyaan), a huge success: Few years back the punjabi womens of california had always been seen talking about how they celebrated festival of Tian which was exclusively for and by women, back in Punjab. But in recent years few women organizations realized the need and started efforts to celebrate the festival. International Organization of Punjabi Women (IOPW) , (http://www.iopwinc.org) is one such organization in California which took initiative and started organizing the festival and is one of the most awaited get-together among women in the region.

Approximately 5 to 6 thousand women participated in this years “Yuba Ciity Tian” held at Yuba Sutter Fairgrounds and seemed like the rainbow with womens wearing colorful clothes and Jewelry reflecting the punjabi culture. The stage was beautifully decorated with the items like CHarkha, Fulkari, Kunjey , Manji etc to give a look and feel of punjab. The enviorment indeed felt like a punjab on stage.

The programme started aroung 11AM in the morning with an opening welcome by the president of IOPW Inc, Mrs, Parminder Kaur Thakkar who warm heartedly welcomed all the women who took time and became part of the mega event exclusively for and by women and handed over the stage to Mrs, Asha Sharma.

Asha Sharma continued to be the stage co-ordinator for next 6 hours in which various programs were presented by the community womens.

Small girls from Guru Ram Das Khalsa school presented Shabad on stage and then there was a main attraction of a fashion show representing the culture of punjab. Dimple Bains’s team preformed gidda which left a memorable experience within the audiences. Other various groups performed among which few did punjabi songs.

Members of the Los Angeles fashion community converged on the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood last night to find out (as Heidi Klum might say) "who's in and who's out" of the running for the third annual L.A. Fashion Awards

Members of the Los Angeles fashion community converged on the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood last night to find out (as Heidi Klum might say) “who’s in and who’s out” of the running for the third annual L.A. Fashion Awards

And even though The Mirror’s home team, the Los Angeles Times Image section, had signed on as a media sponsor for the event, we weren’t tipped off ahead of time, so we trekked over to the Standard’s poolside patio to sip mojitos and wait for the names to be announced.

We’re glad we did, because it gave The Mirror a chance to catch up with retail legend (and nominee) Fred Segal, who was holding court at a table in the back with his daughter Sharon and assorted members of the fashion press.

It had been reported that Segal was planning to open a Las Vegas outpost of his eponymous retail concept at the W project, but he said a change in management had derailed that project. Instead, he said, he is focusing his energy on writing two books. One is an autobiography. (”I invented hip-huggers,” he told The Mirror. “And stone wash.”) The other is a collection of inspirational stories that include contributions from the Dalai Lama and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Though we could have listened to the retail titan wax on all evening, we needed to shuffle off to the other end of the patio, where the nominees for this year’s awards were being announced.

The nominees for the Moss Adams Fashion Innovator award are Jasmin Shokrian, Juan Carlos Obando, Rami Kashou and Thomas Wylde (Paula Thomas, designer).

In the marketing excellence category, the nominees are BCBG Max Azria, Guess by Marciano, Kitson and L.A. Eyeworks.

American Rag Cie, Fred Segal, Lisa Kline and The Way We Wore will face off for the honor of fashion retailer of the year.

The Los Angeles edition of DailyCandy (www.dailycandy.com/?city=2&switch=1) will be awarded the Fashion Communication award, and Bravo’s “Project Runway” is slated to take home the Inspiration Award. The Wells Fargo Century Fashion Achievement Award will be bestowed on Max Azria of the BCBG Max Azria Group. The awards ceremony will take place Oct. 26 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown L.A.
